How to start using WhatsApp on your desktop in 5 easy steps

WhatsApp has finally rolled out what most of you may have been waiting for a long time - the ability to use WhatsApp on your desktop. Wondering how to bring the app to your computer? Not anymore. Our step-by-step tutorial here will guide you through the process of bringing WhatsApp to your Web browser.
(This new service is available to Android, BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Nokia S60 users. Apple users have no reason to rejoice here as the new service will not be available to them "due to Apple platform limitations".)
Before you start the process, make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your phone.
1. Open https://web.whatsapp.com/ in Google Chrome as the new service currently works only in the Chrome browser.
2. In Chrome, you will see a QR code that you need to scan with your phone to log in.
3. To scan the code, go to WhatsApp and look for WhatsApp Web. Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Nokia S60 users can find "WhatsApp Web" in Menu of WhatsApp, while BlackBerry 10 users need to swipe down from top of the app screen to go to "WhatsApp Web". Tap on it and scan the QR code opened on your computer.
4. WhatsApp connects to your phone to sync messages. WhatsApp for Web is simply an extension of your phone. The Web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device - this means all of your messages still live on your phone.
5. You can now start a new chat right from your computer. Your phone needs to stay connected to the Internet for WhatsApp to work on your desktop.
WhatsApp for Web also allows users to turn on desktop notifications right from their browser so that even when your browser is minimised you get alerts for any new messages. One possible downside with WhatsApp for Web is that it allows only one Web session at a time.

Indian Govt Plans Free Wi-Fi in 2500 Cities

The free ride will be only for a limited time, after which users will have to pay for further access, a model similar to what is being offered at airports and other places by private operators.
NEW DELHI: The government will roll out free high-speedwi-fiin 2,500 cities and towns across the country over three years and theprogramme, involving an investment of up toRs7,000crore, will be implemented by state-ownedBharatSancharNigamLtd (BSNL).
However, the free ride will be only for a limited time, after which one would have to pay for further access, a model similar to what is being offered at airports and other places by private operators. For those having a BSNLor MTNLconnection, the switch-over to wi-fi will be similar to roaming "at very nominal costs" once the free usage is over.
"The services will begin in the next financial year (2015-16) and we plan to offer these to subscribers of all mobile operators," BSNL chairman and managing director Anupam Shrivastava told TOI here.
The measure seems to be in line with the Modi government's ambitious 'Digital India' programme that aims at boosting internet connectivity across the country. Also, it is being seen as a measure that will give a boost to struggling BSNL, which has been in the red for the last nearly four financial years and suffered a loss of about Rs 7,000 crore in 2013-14. Telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has already listed revival of BSNL and MTNL among his top priorities.
Shrivastava, who recently took over as the CMD of the ailing PSU, said that most of the top cities around the country will be getting the wi-fi facilitythat aims to provide fast internet speed. "The cities where it will be rolled out include Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Bhopal, Jaipur, Patna, Indore, Chandigarh and Ludhiana."
The BSNL CMD said the wi-fi speed will be "of 4G levels" as the company will develop it around its vast optic fibre and cable network. "Around 50,000-60,000 wi-fi hotspots will be set up as part of the programme."
BSNL is hoping that a favourable tariff plan offered for wi-fi services will help it gain mobile subscribers. Stiff competition from private operators and slow pace of infrastructure upgrades have seen flight of mobile customers from BSNL at a time when its landline base is also shrinking.
"We are sitting on the verge of a data revolution and BSNL has a huge potential here on the back of our landline base and capability. Data capability will be a game changer in the next few years and we will gain a lot through such measures," Shrivastava said.
Data is significant for the PSU's revenues. Data business is expected to generate Rs 1,500 crore out of Rs 13,500 crore revenue estimated through mobile business. "And, of nearly Rs 14,000 crore from fixed line business, half will be through broadband and data services.

    IMPROVING THE LAPTOP’S BATTERY PERFORMANCE

There are following some tips to make improving your laptop's batter performance.

    1. Screen Brightness

When operating in battery mode dim your screen brightness. All the today’s modern laptops come with this feature, this usually can be done by using the Function Key (Fn) or by your manufacturer provided software.
    2. Hibernate instead of Shut DownI have seen many people using laptops are not aware of hibernate feature hence they tend to use the more power expensive shut down instead hibernate. For those who are not aware of hibernation: “Hibernate saves an image of your desktop with all open files and documents, and then it powers down your computer. When you turn on power, your files and documents are open on your desktop exactly as you left them.” You can use hibernate option instead of standby in situations where you are required to leave your laptop unattended for more than 20 minutes.

    3. Clean your laptop’s air vents regularlyYour battery works most efficiently when the operating temperature of your laptop is lower. To avoid overheating and improve thermal efficiency you need to avoid dust build-up in air vents. If your air vents are dust free the cooling fan would run at much lower speed there by reducing the load on your laptop battery. I usually blow dust out of air vents once a week, you can select your time interval depending upon your usage.
    4. Close unwanted programs that you do not use: Close unnecessary programs that are running in background which you do not intend to use. For example you can close IM applications that are not required. Another advantage of closing unwanted applications it frees up your RAM and this avoids using the power expensive virtual memory.
    5. Don’t perform Hard disk and CPU intensive tasksThe more CPU and hard disk intensive task you carry out the more pressure you put on your laptop battery. Avoid playing games or watching movies when in battery mode. Always shutdown your desktop indexing program like Google desktop and other desktop indexing programs as they tend to use more hard disk and CPU resources there by increasing the load on your laptop.
    6. Turn Off unused Devices: You can turnoff bluetooth, Wifi, infrared devices when not in use. Most of the devices get powered from your laptops USB port hence makes lot of sense to avoid using them when in battery mode.

    7. Make best use of your Operating Systems (OS) Power Management feature: All the present generation operating systems (OS) come with good set of power saving features so make best use of them. You can configure how your laptop should behave when it is idle with these features. An example would be like turning off the display after some minutes.
    8. Disable Scheduled Automated Tasks: When in battery mode disable scheduled tasks like virus scanning that can put pressure on your laptop batteries.

    9. Avoid running programs from CD/DVD drive: CD/DVD drives are expensive when it comes to power consumption when compared to your hard drive. When running battery mode copy the programs that you need to run to hard drive and then use them.
10Use the latest BIOS update from your laptop manufacturer: Make sure you are running your laptop with the latest version of BIOS as sometimes laptop manufacturers issue BIOS updates that can enhance your laptops efficiency.
    11. Plan your Work before hand: When you plan to work in battery mode plan your activities before hand so that you don’t spend time thinking and your battery at the other end is draining. When ever I need prepare presentations or prepare some documents I always plan before and then only start my laptop.
