Police lathicharge textile traders in Surat

SURAT: BJP MP CR Paatil's move to divide the leaders of textile traders' community to end the indefinite strike has backfired with tens of thousands of traders joining the protest and keeping their shops shut on Monday.

On Sunday, Paatil had organised a meeting of the textile traders wherein a decision was taken by a few leaders to open the shops from Monday.

The situation at the textile markets on Ring Road was tensed in the morning hours when the BJP MP moved in the markets urging the traders to open their shops. The police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge when the traders shouted slogans against Paatil and the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

About 12 traders were detained by the police during the protest at the Millennium Market on Monday morning. A huge presence of traders was seen at the Millennium Market following the lathi-charge.

One of the traders is learnt to have sustained serious head injuries when the police opened lathi-charge to disperse the mobs at the Millennium Market.
Meanwhile, all the 165 textile markets located at Ring Road, Sahara Darwaja and Salabatpura have been shut on the part of the indefinite bandh call given by the Textile GST Sangarsh Samiti (TGSS).

Vimal Jalan, a textile trader at Jash market, said, "The BJP MP is responsible for dividing the traders. The MP literally moved with the police on Ring Road to force the traders to open their shops. It was when the traders refused, the police resorted to lathi-charge. Now, the situation has gone out of control. We will not open our shops"

The leaders of textile traders' community, who appealed to the traders to open their shops and accept GST, have gone underground sensing the anger among the traders.

Till writing of this report, there is a huge presence of the traders at Millennium Market at Ring Road. Slogan shouting is still continuing against Paatil and the central government.

"We will not accept GST on fabrics. The GST will ruin our trade and that the small traders will have to shut their shops," said Ganesh Agarwal, a textile

trader.

Karan Johar on Yash and Roohi being the ‘finest Dharma productions’: I feel blessed every morning by their presence

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who became the father of twins Roohi and Yash via surrogacy, quips that they are the finest “Dharma productions”. While talking about the experience of parenthood during a book launch here on Thursday, Karan said: “It is daunting, exhilarating and shocking in my case. It’s just everything that I thought it would be and everything that’s not. I still look at them and can’t yet believe that they are mine.
“I am just blessed every morning by their presence. I always say that they are the finest Dharma productions, literally and otherwise.” Karan and Shahid Kapoor’s wife Mira attended the launch of celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija’s new book Eat Delete Junior: Child Nutrition for Zero to Fifteen Years.
Talking about the challenges of parenthood in terms of nutrition, Karan said: “I am playing both mother and father in this dynamic, so I have a double role to play and for me, it’s even more daunting. I have told myself that I am not going to be a hysterical, hyper parent because I see so many of them around me and specially leading actresses who become mothers. From leading actresses, they become paranoid parents.”
Karan Johar, who debuted with mega hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, had his latest directorial venture in the form of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Aishwarya RaiBachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, and Anushka Sharma. The production company he runs was founded by Karan’s father Yash Johar after which Karan took over the company. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was Karan’s first film as a director.

GST: PM gambles big, at stake is India’s growth trajectory & BJP’s poll hopes

NEW DELHI: Noting that he had carried demonetisation "on his shoulders", PM Narendra Modi asked the government's seniormost bureaucrats at a recent interaction to do all they can to make the goods and services tax (GST)+ a success by minutely examining its impact on their departments.

The reference to his singular role in making demonetisation a success in terms of ensuring the government did not face a popular backlash could have reflected a touch of conceit had it not been for the near unanimity in BJP and among senior ministers that "notebandi" rode on Modi's credibility.

Since assuming office, Modi has gradually ramped up the scale of his ambitions after a sedate start. He has mixed an incremental approach with bold measures such assurgical strikes on terror launch pads+ in September 2016, which broke traditional limitations of confronting Pakistan under a nuclear umbrella.

The radical decision to scrap high value currency was, by some counts, even more fraught as it ran the risk of stalling the economy, triggering public discontent and angering an entrenched black money-political nexus.

BJP netas believe the PM's popular standing helped lend crucial weight to the government's argument that demonetisation was aimed at tax evaders and uncovering illegal hoards+ .

With around 20 months to go before the next Lok Sabha polls, Modi has taken on his biggest political challenge that is likely to occupy the government's attention for much of this year. GST's success can strongly embellish his image as a decisive leader and able implementer while unmet expectations can extract a steep cost.

Officials said the PM has been determined to make GST work, going over the big picture and minutiae in scores of briefings and appraisals. He did the same while monitoring the effects of demonetisation — describing his labours as "khopdi khapa raha hoon (wracking my brains)" at a public meeting — and is banking on India's biggest tax recast to accelerate the pace of the economy.

Unlike demonetisation, which was shrouded in secrecy, GST has been subject to protracted and tortuous negotiations in full public gaze. Its scope is larger and more lasting and is seen as part of measures that include, but do not stop, at demonetisation.

The reform has been clothed in the promise that higher compliance and digitisation will deliver low inflation, bigger welfare budgets and moderate tax rates. The prime minister will be keenly aware that these are big promises to keep.
